Workforce Development

The Brown Foundations Workforce Development grants provide the support that allow people to lead productive and satisfying lives. Our grantees are engaged in activities that range from improving basic literacy and numeracy, to supporting technological innovation and entrepreneurial effort. Some of our current grantees are below:

Pima Community College

The Brown Family Foundation made a significant grant to Pima Community College in 2020 to support the PCC Center of Excellence in Applied Technology. The Center is a multi-million dollar investment by PCC to provide innovative workforce development training to meet the needs of our community now and into the future. The Brown Foundation’s grant reflects PCC’s growing importance to economic recovery and growth in the region through public-private partnerships and high-tech training and reskilling of new and incumbent workers. The grant will ensure PCC students are trained using cutting edge tools and learning in modern industrial settings. We hope the grant will also encourage follow-on public-private training partnerships and help attract and retain faculty with the expertise required to lead technological programs with 21st century applications.

Literacy Connects

The Brown Foundations support the efforts of Literacy Connects to ensure that children and adults have the literacy skills needed to succeed in school and over a lifetime. The Brown Foundations supported the formation of Literacy Connects in 2011 when five literacy and arts nonprofits came together and have provided additional funding to ensure these important programs continue.

TIMESTEP (Tucson Initiative for Minoritized student Engagement in Science and TEchnology Program)

TIMESTEP is led by Dr. Gurtina Besla, Assistant Professor and Assistant Astronomer in the UArizona Department of Astronomy and Steward Observatory. The primary goal of the TIMESTEP program is to support STEM undergraduates at the UArizona while on their academic path and to support their professional development. The Brown Foundations supports TIMESTEP in accomplishing this goal through the TIMESTEP Summer Tech Internship which provides students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in industry and while increasing their perspective on career options outside of academia. The internships also give small and medium sized tech companies in Southern Arizona a better understanding of the meaningful contributions these students can provide to their companies.
